Staff Planning

According to the Society for Human Resource Management, a staffing plan is a system that works to monitor and control the costs of human capital while creating an infrastructure to support effective decision-making in an organization. A staffing plan aids organizations in planning for the future by identifying current and future staffing needs. Additionally, staffing plans ensure compliance with state and federal requirements, and assist organizations in developing goals and communicating staffing strategies to stakeholders.

Often linked to staff planning is the process of succession planning. Succession planning and management help organizations ensure that they have the human capital capacity necessary to achieve their goals and effectively deliver results now and in the future.

According to the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR), some of the positive results that stem from succession planning include the ability to develop a strong pool of internal candidates, knowledge transfer, higher retention and the ability to fill management positions without a significant gap. To help employees perform at peak levels, more organizations are turning to a practice called cross training.
Cross training is the practice of teaching an employee who was hired to perform one job function the skills required to perform other job functions as well. With the demand to do more with less, organizations have found that employees involved in cross training not only become skilled at tasks outside the parameters of their jobs, but they become greater assets for their organizations, while gaining knowledge and skills that benefit them personally.

In addition to increased workforce flexibility, lower turnover and higher skill sets, cross training has helped employees see the big picture and become happier at work.
